What a busy first week we have had here at May Watts. I hope your child is feeling excited about school and getting used to our routine. Rules, procedures and routines have been a huge focus this week. I am thrilled to see that the kids are catching on to the daily routines of the day. There is so much to learn and it can be tiring and frustrating for some but we will soon feel comfortable and confident about expectations.
You have awesome kids!!! I am enjoying getting to know them as we come together as a classroom community. We have read stories about school and names such as From Anne to Zach and Tikki Tikki Tembo. We counted letters in our names and compared the length of our name with a friend. Get-to-know-you games have given us a little opportunity to learn about our friends in the classroom. At the end of my post, I will share the first names of students in the class to help foster conversations about new friends.
Thank you for being mindful about what types of snacks can be sent to school. We have several students with allergies and I know their families are appreciative of your efforts. I see so many healthy choices too! Please put snacks in the front zipper of your child's backpack...separate from lunch. Thank you!
Today I am sending all gym shoes home. Some boys brought an extra pair that are not needed to stay here at school. Girls who are wearing sandals during the warm weather time can send the gym shoes back to stay if you would like and then as it cools down I would like everyone to TRY to wear gym shoes to school on PE days. If it's just too hard to remember the schedule (believe me, I know it can be), feel free to keep them at school.
Curriculum Night is Thursday, September 13th. This is for PARENTS ONLY. If you have no babysitter, it is perfectly fine to have just one parent come while the other stays home with the kids.
Remember, this weekend is a four day weekend. I will see the students on late start Wednesday, Sept. 5th. Have a great weekend!

August 23
It was great to see all the kindergartners and families today! I know I put you to work and gave you a lot of information (and probably forgot to mention some things) so I thought I'd post some of the biggies.
TRANSPORTATION
Please make sure your child gets on the correct bus at the correct stop. I know many areas have multiple buses and it can get confusing. Your child will be escorted to our room in the morning and to the gym in the afternoon.
Daycare will also be escorted to their spots.
Walkers and riders will enter Door 11. The doors will open at 8:50 and the last bell is at 9:05. They will exit the same door at 3:35.
SNACK AND LUNCH
We will be having snack around 11:00. Please pack the snack in the front part of your child's backpack or separately from his/her lunch. We have several students with a variety of food allergies. Please refer to the green sheet that has snack suggestions. Please strike out the cheese option as dairy allergies are in our class. No dairy snacks please. Please try to bring a lunch for the first week or so. Have it clearly labelled. We eat at 1:05.
SPECIALS
If you look to your left on the blog you will find KP's specials schedule.
On the days your child has gym, he/she should wear gym schools to school. If your child brought shoes to keep at school, that is okay but wearing them on the gym days is my preferred method as it can be difficult for the children to change their shoes by themselves and leaving the shoes on the floor creates a little extra clutter. Whatever works best for you.
When your child begins bringing books home from the library, they will need to return them by the next check out day. They are free to return them early but we will only check out on Thursdays.
Art shirts will stay in your child's backpack all year for art and in class activities.
We are signed up for computer lab on Fridays. I welcome a parent volunteer during our time and I will let you know when we are up and running.
IMPORTANT DATES
I have a calendar on our blog. Please refer to it so you don't miss our Ice Cream Social on Monday.
Thank you for coming today! I'm looking forward to a great year!

Welcome to May Watts Elementary school! My name is Mrs. Peterson and I will be your child's kindergarten teacher. I am looking forward to an exciting year of learning, growth and fun! Although the 1st through 5th grade students will be meeting teachers on Monday, your kindergartner will step into the classroom on THURSDAY, AUGUST 23RD. You should have received a letter stating a time slot when you will accompany your child to school.
Above you will see a sneak peek into our KP classroom. On Thursday, your child will find his/her desk and coat hook and enjoy a story. We will confirm how your child is being transported to and from school. Also during that time, all supplies will be labelled and sorted. If you would like to get a head start, label only folders, binder, art smock and supply box. Pencils, crayons, glue and markers will not need to be labelled.
I am looking forward to meeting all the families of KP and cannot wait to spend the upcoming year with your child! See you Thursday!
